Masamoto Ueda, maître autodidacte du ramen (soupe de nouilles), et sa femme Kazuko tiennent leur restaurant à Tokyo depuis plus de quarante ans. Avec leurs habitués ils ont créé un lieu intime et joyeux. Sachant que le maître doit prendre sa retraite, chacun se résout à tirer le meilleur parti du temps qui reste.
