Sorcières : chronique d'un massacre
Réalisation
Marie THIRY
In 1609, Pierre de Lancre, an inquisitor sent to the Basque Country by Henry IV, sentenced 80 people to the stake. Between the 15th and 17th centuries, 40,000 to 60,000 people, mostly women, were condemned for witchcraft across Europe. Using the writings of the Inquisitorial Judge in particular, historians are examining this cycle of violence.

The author and director of a dozen scientific documentaries for ARTE, Marie Thiry is as passionate about the history of people and societies as she is about the researchers who pass it on. In her films, she likes to communicate the enthusiasm of research, but also its share of human adventure and discovery. From prehistory to the present day, she often approaches history by exploring the monuments that tell its story. In collaboration with Marc Jampolsky, she has co-written a series of architectural works on the great monuments of France and Europe, deciphered using new investigative techniques (Château de Chambord, Mont St Michel, Versailles, the Vatican) and a documentary on the vanished civilisations of Amazonia. His documentary on the Cosquer cave won 12 awards and 6 special mentions.
