To mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp, this 5-part series retraces the history of deportation through the accounts of 46 survivors. They came from Poland, Germany, Belgium, Romania, Hungary or France... All of them are Jews. They all have a number tattooed on their forearm. All were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Catherine Bernstein directed her first short, Zohra on the Beach, in 1996. Followed three documentaries on German guilt: Grand’ma, Sour Grapes and The Absent Ones. Murder of a Hatmaker, 85 minutes, made in 2006, deals with the plundering of the Jews by the Vichy government, winning awards worldwide. In 2007 she directed a portrait of the philosopher Michel Serres for France 5 and Asylum, shown on Arte made from found footage from psychiatric hospitals. Her documentary, Naked, 2009, won the Best film Award at Saint Petersburg International Festival. The Bookseller a spy documentary has won awards worldwide. She directed T4, A Physician under the Nazis and then Fritz Bauer, a prosecutor againt the nazi. En 2019, she directed La SNCF sous L'Occupation and Let's Save the Children dealing with the role of the French Train Company and the WW2 deportation of the Jews.
