Are you a journalist looking to write and direct a documentary?
The STORY Lab is a documentary writing workshop designed to help you develop your project and your skills as a documentary writer/director. In five three-day sessions, you’ll write a documentary film project in the workshop, then present it to an audience of professionals (producers, broadcasters, distributors, etc.) at FIPADOC Pro in January 2025 in Biarritz.
Training objectives :
- Learn the basic techniques of documentary dramaturgy.
- Use journalism as a basis for the documentary approach.
- Read and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of a documentary project.
- Write a documentary film project.
- Present a documentary film project via oral presentation to a producer or broadcaster.
- Understand the rules of narrative and dramaturgy, and use them to write audiovisual reports.
In 2025, the STORY Lab will be supervised and directed by Olivier Daunizeau.
Olivier Daunizeau has produced 15 documentary films for cinema and television, including El Sicario, room 164 by Gianfranco Rosi (2010) and Les Equilibristes by Perrine Michel (2020). As a screenwriter or script doctor, he has collaborated on the writing of over 100 documentaries and podcasts, both single and serial. He is co-founder of the Ecritures Documentaires association, runs writing workshops in France and abroad, and teaches documentary scriptwriting at INA Sup.
The application must include the following documents IN ONE PDF:
- Cover letter.
- CV.
- Project summary (1 page maximum).
- Project brief (1 page maximum).
- State of documentary research: documentation, survey, access to fieldwork, witnesses, archives, … (1 page maximum).
- List of three recent documentaries and a short review of one of them (1 half-page maximum).
