DOC4TEENS STREAM

Through the diversity of its subjects, documentary cinema brings people together across borders, and federates teenage experiences. The Docs4Teens programs are designed to offer the best of European documentary films, based on a selection of films from five European festivals in order to bring together young generations across Europe through documentary. The Krakow Film Festival (Poland), Festival Dei Popoli (Italy), Porto/Post/Doc (Portugal), Docudays UA (Ukraine) and Fipadoc (France) are all involved in promoting and circulating documentary films, to make them more visible to young audiences. For this fourth selection, Docs4Teens presents a showcase of the 15 best documentaries for 12-16 years-old screened in 2024 at their respective festivals.

Documentary offers a variety of ways to reveal, in a frontal but sometimes lighter way, the power of the collective to overcome social and political injustice, and to confront the discrimination that hinders the beginnings of adult life. While Maydegol follows a young Afghan refugee in Iran, who fights to make boxing her profession despite the violence that surrounds her, Nelson the piglet reveals difference and perseverance are often a weapon.

Other films place the territory – be it imaginary, utopian or real – as the medium for a shared identity. Like fragments of history, City of Poets and Percebes use archives and animation to embody the chronicles of locations, either through the life cycle of the shellfish that occupy Portugal’s coasts, or through the scattered, metaphorical memories of forgotten poets.
