Presentation
Fipadoc promotes short films as a great way to explore contemporary documentary creation. By mixing approaches and themes during a screening, students discover new ways of telling real stories, and confront stories from the world over.
The first program, recommended for high-school students, analyzes lives shaped by political decisions, which mark bodies through resistance or exile. Gaps documents the effects of Franco’s regime on women, revealing the workings of state institutions that jailed those who opposed the regime. Sometimes, running away is obvious, but not without its difficulties. In the style of an animal documentary, Bloodline depicts the materiality of the borders separating Belarus and Poland, and the hunting carried out to prevent some people from crossing them. Home is 1117 km away reveals the contradictory emotions that accompany a departure, where loneliness, displacement and comfort are intertwined. From a variety of angles, Mirtemir Is Alright and Deadlock show that the act of staying – to work, to escape through song, or to wait for better days – is surely just one way of getting ready for a departure, in the footsteps of past generations.
The documentary’s intimate approach brings to light daily life faced with otherness. In this second program for middle-school students, strength and resilience go together with escape. Five short films explore, through past and present history, the ardor that drives the eccentricity of our passions.
While Percebes and Perla et les humains take a fresh look at the abnegation of a few humans to protect and cherish our animal friends, Voy and Tough Moves draw a portrait of two young sportsmen, where passion rhymes with discipline. Passion may fade, but love endures. A case in point is Quelque chose de divin, which examines what remains of a past love, eroded by time and war.
To support students in their perceptions and questions, these two sessions are followed by discussions with members of the film team.
